CONCORSO USI

NUOVA AULA MAGNA E NUOVO EDIFICIO

PER LE SCIENZE INFORMATICHE

A large roof, a translucent three-dimensional membrane that develops from the main building towards the park on Via Madonnetta, has been designed. Accordingly, a covered square is formed, generously illuminated by the natural light that actually binds the exterior spaces of the various buildings and extends to the terrace of the cafeteria, facing south. The building designed is partly "hypogaeum" and is in fact without facades, allowing to keep separate and distinct the volumes of the   for the classrooms and for the faculty of informatics. The entrance to the new building is planned at the end of the square that connects the new vertical circulation block (stairs and lifts) of the main building with the terrace of the cafeteria; the external catering place  is considered as the fulcrum and meeting space of great importance for the people who are inside the campus: both the park and the square will be re-evaluated by the public functions that develop on the ground floor creating new dynamics for the use of outdoor spaces.

The cafeteria is located on the ground floor, under the translucent dome (steel structure, insulating glazing and fixed solar shielding with metallic nets); The lecture hall for 250 people is located in the basement and is reached by the staircase that crosses the foyer with double height. The location of the building beyond the space of the garage allows to transfer to earth the important loads deriving from the single span structure of the lecture hall of 300 sqm without having to burden on the structure of the parking lot itself.

The Building for the Faculty of Computer science re-proposes form and proportions of the volume of lecture halls USI, built by Bruno-Fioretti-Marquez-Martini architects. The project proposes a direct dialogue between the two buildings, developing the theme of the different properties of stained glass surfaces. If the existing classroom building had solved the theme of the skin with a series of horizontal opaque glass panels, enameled inside with a deep red color, and with large transparent surfaces in correspondence of the classrooms, for the new faculty of informatics we are proposing to use etched and serigraphy glass, with a series of thin vertical lines, creating an effect similar to a barcode, in such a way as to have a translucent element that diffuses and filters the light inside the school spaces: the transparent glass parts are reduced to a band at eye level, in orders to mitigate the disturbing reflections due to direct light on the computer screens.
